The excruciating pain of losing one's home

Home has always been an emotional subject for me, partly because I didn't know what it was for long stretches of my life. Its meaning has also changed as I've grown older and thought more about it. A home is not just four walls and a roof; it's much more than that. It has the immensity of an entire universe, and it grounds our very existence. It's the place that gives us strength to venture boldly into the world.

I've been thinking about this deeply as I watched coverage of the tremendous destruction caused by the wildfires in LA. The only video I could bring myself to watch was this heartbreaking segment by Jimmy Kimmel, and I've been unable to stop thinking about how I would feel if I lost my home.

The video is also a reminder that we humans have the remarkable ability to help others in their moments of darkness.

I have a longer and more detailed post on the meaning of home that I have been working on for well over a year, and I hope to publish it soon.
